Deployment of Open Innovation: where to start?

A different starting point for every company

Deployment Open Innovation – Our customers who want to deploy Open Innovation tools and practices often ask us the same question: where do we start? Our answer: it depends!

Indeed, after several years of experience in deploying Open Innovation, we have found that not all companies have the same starting point due to their culture, their organization, the skills already acquired or being acquired.

Some companies are in a position where they are discovering Open Innovation, without specific skills or organization. Other companies are in a stage where they are testing Open Innovation but nothing has been formalized yet. There are companies that have identified people who’s  mission is to increase the organization’s Open Innovation skills , but those people need support. Finally, some companies – the most mature – are operational and want to ensure the efficiency and reproducibility of their Open Innovation processes as well as measure the results

To provide a relevant answer, it is therefore necessary to share a diagnosis with the company and define the most appropriate response to support its transition to an innovation more open.

We have identified four situations that require four possible answers.

Situation 1 – “Outsourcing”: the company is just discovering Open Innovation, does not have an identified Broker and does not even necessarily have Seekers who have time to devote to an Open Innovation project.

Situation 2 – “Incubating”: the company is already very outward looking but has not yet formalized clear roles. In particular, it did not identify any person in the organization who could play the role of Broker.

Situation 3 – “Assisted”: the company has identified people whose profiles are  adapted to a Broker role. However, these people are not trained and must be coached to develop their skills.

Situation 4 -‘Deployed’: Seekers and Brokers are identified and well trained.
